This project explores the idea that YouTube is putting on a music festival to celebrate the Internet and all the musicians that call their platform home. This will be achieved through not only a modular computer-themed stage designed by Susan Sualnier but also a series of animated visuals that change the style from early pixel computer visuals to modern memes and motion design, to more futuristic cyberpunk expectations designed and animated by myself.

Motion designers are tasked with producing content for many different clients in various fields, and because of this, we must be able to easily work with other professionals in those fields. One such scenario is that of concert visuals. Working with Susan Saulnier (Entertainment Design - Susan Saulnier (susansaulnierart.com)) from the Entertainment Design major this project explores the process of designing a music festival’s stage and the visuals that would be projected onto it.

The Goal

Who is Susan

Susan Saulnier is an Entertainment Design, and Illustration alumni from Ringling College of Art and Design, and was the volunteerism coordinator at Ringling. She was my boss and is a dear friend. We had been talking about working on a project together for a while and with both of our classes at the time having open projects we decided to pull the trigger with a concert festival.

Our opening act and the inspiration for this direction of the event is that of Bo Burnham’s ‘Welcome to the Internet’. This song has a fast tempo that is used to express the onslaught of information that the Internet provides if you want it to or not. Pairing this fast beat and the idea of the Internet dumping all these random things onto the user we went with the idea of old pop-ups that overwhelm the user filling the screen one after another.

Deep in the Gulf of Mexico there lies a crashed escape pod.
What mysteries does it hold, and can you crack open the strange vessel?

Deep in an undersea cavern is the lost city of the mermaids forgotten to all but the mermaids, you few travelers, and a few strangely smart cats. Here you can find an old, abandoned chest with untold fortune
or mishaps contained within.

Early Interactions

Inspired by a test project I had done previously I started with less clean masking to test out the interactivity.
